Chronic Pain Overview

Chronic pain affects millions of Americans every year, and in a significant number of cases, patients have tried a multitude of treatments without optimal outcome. It is important to understand what constitutes chronic pain and how treatment may be beneficial.

Chronic pain is defined as an ongoing and sometimes widespread pain that persists for a period of 6 months or longer. It results from a medical condition or other internal or external changes in body function secondary to injuries, surgery, etc. These changes increase the body’s sensitivity to pain where even a slight stimulation may become painful.  Due to the often debilitating nature of the pain, a person’s ability to perform normal daily activities and routine tasks can be severely limited. The progression of the pain usually starts by interfering with a person’s ability to work and participate in recreational and social activities. These limitations often result in further complications that affect relationships with family and friends, loss of job, and other major impacts on physical well-being.  As a result, chronic pain may eventually impact mental health.
